Summer House’s Person-Centered Supports in our Residential Homes

At Summer House, Inc., we are dedicated to supporting adults with developmental disabilities with person-centered thinking and practices, which is at the core of all four of our programs: two residential care homes, our independent living services program, and our supported living services program. This approach is more than just a philosophy; it is a fundamental commitment to enhancing individuals’ quality of life, empowering them to make choices, and ensuring they feel valued and respected.

A person-centered approach prioritizes each individual’s preferences and needs, allowing them to take an active role in shaping their environment, activities, and support systems.

One of the most significant aspects of person-centered thinking is fostering and encouraging individuals to make choices about their own lives. This begins with simple yet meaningful decisions, such as personalizing their living space. Individuals can choose from a selection of five paint colors for their rooms, reinforcing that their preferences and personal style matter.

Food plays a crucial role in daily life, and ensuring individuals have a say in their meals is a key part of our person-centered approach. Weekly menus are created based on our clients’ food preferences. Individuals can provide feedback through dinner evaluation forms or during house council meetings, ensuring meals reflect personal tastes while accommodating dietary needs and cultural preferences.

A fulfilling life includes engaging in activities that align with one’s interests. Our programs have featured monthly activity calendars designed with direct input from residents. These calendars include a diverse selection of experiences such as art, dance, physical exercise, movie nights, and educational-themed activities. To ensure inclusivity, we incorporate free activities for those on a tight budget and accessible options for non-ambulatory residents, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate.

A person’s living environment should be a reflection of their tastes and preferences. At Summer House, individuals have a say in home décor, landscaping, and shared spaces. From selecting artwork and picture frames to choosing flowers for the garden, residents are empowered to make their living space truly feel like home.

A unique aspect of our person-centered practice is involving individuals in hiring decisions. Potential team members meet with clients first to ensure mutual compatibility. This process allows individuals to have a say in who supports them, fostering a sense of comfort and trust between team members and clients.

Each individual has unique goals and aspirations, which is why their Individual Service Plan (ISP) is designed around their personal objectives. Clients inform staff about the skills they want to develop and the support they need, ensuring that their service plans align with their ambitions. Skill-building sessions are scheduled based on each individual’s availability and preferences, reinforcing our commitment to personalized support.

By embracing person-centered practices, Summer House creates an environment where individuals with developmental disabilities feel heard, respected, and empowered. This approach fosters a sense of belonging, autonomy, and dignity, reinforcing that every individual’s voice matters.

Ultimately, person-centered thinking isn’t just a best practice, it is a fundamental shift in how organizations support individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring they lead fulfilling, self-directed lives.
